THE BOOKHANDLER has been around since 1992, selecting books to match History and Social Studies standards.
THE BOOKHANDLER STORY: In 1989 Nancy Lemke was asked to write a book about the explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. Who? she asked, but she left her job on the editorial staff of the San Diego Zoo to write and illustrate the book. This was her introduction to the fascinating characters and events of history.
Lemke also learned that state standards require teachers to teach about obscure people like Cabrillo and they need good stories to interest kids in the people and events of history. Textbooks are often too dull or politically sanitized to do this. Lemke decided to bring the teachers who needed books together with the good books she knew of, so she founded THE BOOKHANDLER.
Since then, she has grown THE BOOKHANDLER to over 1,000 titles. She also is consulted by major children's publishers as a history expert, and writes and/or edits more books.
Nancy and her husband Bob travel around the country, visiting museums and historical sites, looking for new and different books to spark kids' interest in the people and places of our land. They have a great time doing this, learn intriguing history, and meet wonderful people.
The business is located in Nancy's home near San Diego. If you are interested in seeing the collection, make an appointment and come visit their historic home. Nancy also attends at least two California state-wide conferences for educators each year: the California School Library Association (CSLA) conference and the conference of the California Council of Social Studies (CCSS). She also is one of the few vendors invited to specialized history and social studies seminars around California.
Each catalog title is annotated honestly about each book's strengths and weaknesses. Nancy loves customers to call and ask for book suggestions on particular topics. If she doesn't know one off the top of her head, she'll gladly research it.
Please call or email with questions or suggestions. The more she talks with customers, the better she stays on top of what teachers and librarians need.
THE BOOKHANDLER has a print catalog. If you would like a copy, please call or email and request one.
